While a raise in compensation remains one of the top reasons for acquiring a professional certification, candidates are hesitant to embark on the path to obtaining a certification because career progress is not immediately obvious. When choosing a professional qualification, foresight is vital, as it is recommended that professionals plan forward on desired career objectives.

There are two key reasons why an ITIL certification can help you advance in your career and succeed. For starters, ITIL accreditation, as a best management practice technique, means you can optimize service on a daily and long-term basis. Second, as a scalable framework, ITIL can provide demonstrable benefits across a wide range of industries. As a result, the skills you learn will apply to a wide range of professional prospects.

If you're thinking about getting an ITIL certification, here's a list of possible ITIL job opportunities for you.

Different Levels in ITIL Certification

There are five levels of ITIL certification: foundation, practitioner, intermediate, expert, and master. Each of these levels has its own set of conditions for appearing, clearing, and receiving credits.

1. ITIL Foundation Level

It is an entry-level certification that provides a general understanding of the ITIL service lifecycle's core aspects, basic ideas, and technologies. This certification has no requirements, and anyone is eligible to take the exam. This certification covers all five aspects of the service lifecycle, as well as the connections between the various stages of the ITIL lifecycle. The Foundation Level certification is designed to familiarize applicants with standardized terms and the general knowledge needed for ITIL Services Support and Service Delivery.

2. ITIL Practitioner Level

The Practitioner is the next stage following Foundation. It was created to fill up the gaps between Foundation and Intermediate.

3. ITIL Intermediate Level

Every subject in the Intermediate Level course focuses on a different topic of IT Service Management. The modules are divided into two categories: service lifecycle and service capability. Candidates can select from a variety of modules and specialize in topics that appear to be more relevant to their area of expertise.

4. ITIL Expert Level

The Expert Level certification is a more advanced certification that delves into all of ITIL's processes and practices. The ITIL Master Level certification requires this qualification. This level of certification is designed to provide candidates with the advanced knowledge required to comprehend the full ITIL framework in depth. Candidates can choose their modules and specialize in one or more topics here as well. Candidates who have earned the appropriate credits in the ITIL 4 foundation training, Practitioner, and Intermediate level courses and have a superior understanding and skill base in ITIL Best Practices are awarded the Expert Level certification.

5. ITIL Master Level

The ITIL Master Level certifies a person's ability to use ITIL principles, methodologies, and procedures in the workplace or practical tasks involving real-world scenarios. Because each candidate will choose their scenario, there is no set syllabus or training program for this qualification.

Different Job Roles in ITIL

ITIL presents a range of standard role categories that are then applicable throughout its many ITSM processes or capabilities, where they become specific, rather than generic, roles, i.e., when generic roles are tied to a specific ITIL process like incident management. To assist you understand these four generic ITIL jobs and their duties in Information Technology Service Management (ITSM), we've put up a list of resources.

1. Process Owner

Example role: Head of Service Operations

Job profile: Contingency planning, request compliance, access management, event management, and issue resolution.

The primary role of the process owner is to ensure that the process they own is operating as planned. The method in question should ideally have been agreed upon and documented by multiple personnel inside the business.

As part of this, the process owner must guarantee that the agreed-upon process is capable of meeting the original goals and objectives, as well as that the process is carried out according to the agreed-upon specifications. As illustrated in the example role above, a process owner might be the owner of multiple processes. And, depending on the size and maturity of the firm, which process is owned by which position will differ across businesses.

In the scenario above, the Head of Service Operations would be responsible for ensuring that each process under their control is carried out according to plan and achieves its goals. As the project manager of the access management process, for example, they would be responsible for ensuring that the process is effective in restricting application access following the company's security policy. The process owner is also in charge of the process's design, financing, and change management, as well as the metrics that go along with it.

Other roles and accountability for the process owner include:

  • Procedure Communications: The process owner is responsible for raising and maintaining process awareness, including disseminating information about the process and any modifications to it.
  • Resource Provision: The process owner will provide the resources to execute the process's operations and ensure that all other parties involved are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Improvement Activity: Identifying and addressing process difficulties, as well as highlighting and assisting in the delivery of improvement opportunities, is a critical accountability component for any process owner.
  • Periodical Process Reviews: Regular process reviews should be held by the process owner to maintain the process up to date and ensure that it is being used as intended.
  • Periodical Process Audits: The process should be audited regularly, if necessary, to ensure that it complies with internal and/or external regulations. To accomplish this, the process owner will need to develop and enforce process-based policies.

2. Process Manager

Example role: IT Service Desk Manager

Job profile: Contingency planning, request compliance.

Process managers should engage with the process owner to determine how activities will be carried out, and then be responsible for ensuring that they are carried out. Based on the scale of the company, the process manager and the process owner may be the same person. However, in larger firms, these two jobs will be distinct. There's also the possibility that a single process will have multiple managers. For example, if a single process is carried out in multiple locations, each location may require its process manager. The IT Service Desk Manager is in charge of the incident response plan and is responsible for ensuring that it is followed correctly.

In this position, the IT Service Desk Manager will collaborate closely with the workers who are responsible for incident management to ensure that everything goes well. If a problem emerges during the process, the IT Service Desk Manager will be responsible for resolving it in collaboration with the process owner.

Other roles and accountability for the process owner include:

  • People Management: It entails employing and managing the people needed to carry out the process's operations.
  • Process Management: Ensuring that the process operates smoothly and efficiently on a day-to-day and monthly basis.
  • Performance Reporting: Ensuring that the process is in good functioning order and reporting on its results.
  • Process Enhancement: Assisting the process owner in identifying and implementing process changes.

3. Process Practitioner

Example role: IT Service Desk Agent

Job profile: Contingency planning, request compliance.

The persons who carry out the main operations of a process are known as process practitioners. In some businesses, the process manager may also be responsible for part or all of the activities that the process practitioner is in charge of. They're also in charge of keeping records to prove that the necessary activities were completed. The IT Service Desk Agent is an excellent example of a process practitioner; they are not responsible for the process itself, but they are responsible for following it and ensuring that the proper activities are completed.

Assume the IT Service Desk Agent is dealing with an access request. To complete the procedure properly, the agent must have all of the necessary information from the customer, as well as the appropriate authorizations. They can then proceed to giving access and resolving the ticket once these tasks have been completed. They'll be in charge of making sure that all of these tasks are accomplished and documented. To ensure that the process is effective, process practitioners collaborate closely with service users, consumers, management, and coworkers. They must also know how their function fits within the IT and parent businesses, as well as the value they deliver.

4. Service Owner

Example role: IT Comms Services Manager

Job profile: Event management, and issue resolution.

In ITSM, the role of the service owner is critical. The launch of a new IT service, as well as its transition into production and ongoing maintenance, are essentially the responsibility of service owners. Service owners guarantee that their services are delivered within agreed-upon service levels (SLAs) and are accountable to the customer throughout the ITIL service lifecycle, service owners should make sure that the IT organization's services are focused on and match business needs. A service owner may own many services, and they will frequently oversee a staff of technical experts committed to their business.

As the service owner for all of the company's communication channels, this manager must ensure that they are meeting business demands and will have to work hard to maintain them up-to-date and pertinent as the company's needs evolve. Any concerns with any of the communication channels will be sent to the service owner, who will work with their team to resolve the issue.

A service owner's entire accountabilities are similar to those of a process owner in that they would manage any modifications, develop and implement service improvements, and communicate as necessary to keep others informed about what's going on with the service. They must also assess and audit their service regularly to stay current with business needs and comply with both local and global requirements.
