Power BI is a popular and widely used business intelligence tool in the data world. A report from Microsoft has manifested that around 50,000 companies have been using Power BI to clean, model, transform and visualize their data.
I have witnessed that the usage of Power BI requirements have been expanding fast, with more than 80,000 open vacancies worldwide. However, you must get the Power BI certification to prove your skills to the employer. Fortunately, I have come across the premium Microsoft Power BI certification, which is exactly designed for professionals like me to learn at our own pace. And the best part is I had the opportunity to collaborate and discover more about Microsoft Power BI requirements, which helped me clear the PL-300 exam.
While learning about Power BI, I can work with its user-friendly interface and learn about the complexity behind the screen. Power BI has allowed me to contribute to various pragmatic projects across various domains, from data loading to visualization.
What is Power BI?
I have read that the global data sphere will hold around 80zb of data in 2021. If this trend continues to evolve, it will nearly double by 2025. While the numbers are impressive (and a little intimidating), what would we do with the raw data without context?
Here’s why you need to understand Power BI requirements. The tool will sort and aggregate these raw data and transport them into actionable, intelligent insights.
Businesses have multiple intelligence tools to choose from, so why do most of them prefer Power BI requirements? It is because they help you generate dynamic reports and feature data modeling, complete data comparison, and more.
Understanding Power BI Requirements
As I have mentioned before, Power BI is a revolutionary, remarkable program that enables high-speed data integration and the creation of plenty of reports. This is made possible by automated data extraction from servers, computers, and clouds.
Power BI can be downloaded and installed on the computer as an application from the Microsoft Play Store or as a file without any charges. However, the report server must meet certain Power BI requirements to install and run such a prestigious program. If you cannot meet the requirements, installation will not be possible.
After reading about Power BI requirements, the most common question I have people ask me is, ‘How long will it take to learn the course?’ Well, for me, it is best to enroll for Business Intelligence certification online, which will take one to 6 months to get certified for Power BI requirements.
Getting the certification has led my employers to believe I have the knowledge to work with gateway Power BI requirements like DAX, M language, and more. Similarly, the certification will enhance your expertise and experience with all the aspects of Microsoft Power BI requirements.
Hardware and Software Requirements
Similar to any software, Power BI also has certain hardware and software requirements. Below are the Power BI requirements for the system.
- Supported operating system: Power BI program can be installed in a device with the following operations systems.
- Windows Server 2019 Data Centre, server 2019 standard, server 2016 standard, server 2016 datacenter.
- Windows 10 Home, 10 Enterprises, 10 professionals
- Windows 11
- Web browser: Microsoft Power BI requirements need Internet Explorer 11 or the next updated version to function.
- Screen resolution: Power BI requirements involve the ideal screen resolution of a minimum of 1440x900 or 1600x900. The Power BI program doesn’t support any lower screen resolutions.
- Hard drive: Power BI supports the hard drive with a minimum of 1 GB of free space.
- Memory: The minimum Power BI requirements for memory are specified at 1 GB, while up to 4 GB is recommended.
- Processor type: The installation of Power BI service is only possible with the x64 processor type.
- Processor speed: Given the Power BI requirements for processor type, the speed should be in the specific level of 1.4 GHz with the recommended level of 2.0 GHz or faster.
Data Source Connectivity
Power BI requirements support a large range of data sources, which can be connected to an app to build a dataflow to aggregate, analyze, and visualize data. Some of the supported data sources are,
1. All
Under Get data, you can view the available data connection. It will allow you to connect to various alt files, including SQL database, Azure cloud, and other web platforms like Google Analytics.
2. Files
- Excel (.xlsx) – An Excel workbook encompasses a variety of data types. It includes the manually-entered data or the queers collected from external data sources.
- Power BI Desktop (.pbix) – Power BI desktop is utilized for query assessments and loading data from external data sources to create reports.
- Comma-separated values (.csv) – They are simplified text fields with rows of data. Each row will have one or more values that are speared by common.
3. Database
- SQL database
- Access database
- Oracle database
- IBM Netezza
- MySQL database
- Sybase database
- Power Platform
- Power BI dataset
- Dataflows
4. Azure
- Azure SQL database
- Azure blob storage
- Azure Synapse Analytics SQL
- Azure Database for PostgreSQL
5. Online Services

Data Preparation and Transformation
Data preparation and transformation is considered the most challenging and time-consuming aspect of the latest Power BI requirements. Some requirements will expand the program's capability in various ways.
- Self-service tools for big data: dataflows are used to ingest, cleanse, transform, integrate, and visualize data from various observation sources. Business analysts and BI professionals use familiar self-service tools like Power Query data to handle the most complex data preparation challenges.
- Advanced Analytics and AI with Azure: Power BI requirements for dataflows can store data in Azure data lake storage Gen2. It will ingest the data through Power BI and leverage the complete power of machine learning for easy collaboration.
- Support CDM: The CDM (Common Data Model) is a series of standardized data schema and a metasystem that enables data consistency and its application across business processes.
Creating Effective Data Models
Effective data modeling is one of the four primary pillars of Power BI requirements. It also serves as the focal point for the design and purpose of generating every report. Setting up effective data models requires a perfect layout. Two of the commonly used appliances are,
- Star Schema: Star schema is built with a central fact table; encompasses multiple dimension tables with branching fact tables resembling a star shape.
- Waterfall: In this mode, tables are arranged in rows, with dimension tables in the first two and fact tables in the next one. It will make it easy for you to visualize the dimensions that fall into the fact tables.
Designing Visualizations and Reports
Power BI, a cloud-based business analytics app from Microsoft, allows you to visualize the data with better speed and excellence efficiently. It includes,
- R script: A popular statistical language used to run sophisticated analyses and generate reports with deeper insights. With the help of R scripts, you can simply type the script and load it in the essential libraries.
- Python: Python is a widely used programming language that is used to perform statistical analysis and repetitive modeling. You will also get the Python icon for visualization and transformation of data.
While designing reports, they are usually represented in two or three pages through the Power Bi system. Some of the visual Power BI requirements are:
- Cluster: Cluster helps distinguish the time each employee contributes to a specific project.
- Pie chart: A pie chart displays every employee’s contribution to a project.
- Treemap: It will represent emp id which includes the bonus and gender of the employee.
Apart from these are many more variable visualization charts and graphs, including map charts, donut charts, slices, and stack column charts for better report generation.
Implementing Security and Data Governance
To take control of your data's consistency, security, and availability, it is important to deploy data governments in Power BI. Below are Power BI requirements for security,
- Data quality: Ensuring regular data quality checks and building security measures will help you maintain the accuracy and integrity of your data. You can identify the issues in data quality before you begin to generate reports.
- Training materials: Good data government is all about having adequate training about Power BI. It should encompass developing videos, manuals, and documents that offer reliable information about the process.
Conclusion
Are you preparing for your career in the data world? The drastic rise in the business market inducing the emphasis on digital transformation, increasing demand for data visualization, and higher data generation have driven companies to hire talented minds with excellent Power BI skills.
