ISTQB ® Foundation Level Training FAQs

ISTQB ® Foundation Level Training

Prerequisites: 

  • Those who wish to sit for the Foundation Level certification should ideally have at least six months' practical experience in a professional testing role. 
  • It is recommended that candidates should familiarise themselves with the syllabus at this link before attending the training. 

Certification: 

  • On successful completion of the Certification Exam, your local ISTQB® Member Board or Exam Provider will post or e-mail the certificate to you. 

The Exam:

  • 60 minute ‘closed book’ examination. (75 minutes for candidates for whom English is not the native language)  
  • 40 multiple choice questions 
  • Pass mark is 65% (26/40) 
  • Non-programmable calculators are allowed during paper based examinations. For online examinations, candidates can access an on-screen calculator. 

The Foundation level course is suitable for anyone who is involved in software testing, such as testers, test engineers, test analysts, test consultants, test managers, IT professionals, user acceptance testers and software developers. Those who need to understand the testing process, such as project managers, quality managers, business analysts, directors and consultants can also benefit from this training. 

On completion of the training, you will be able to: 

  • Understand and employ a common language for communication with other testers and project stakeholders. 
  • Follow established testing concepts, process and approaches, and principles to support test objectives. 
  • Use established techniques to design and prioritize tests; analyze both functional and non-functional specifications at all test levels for systems below a medium level of complexity. 
  • Carry out tests based on agreed test plans 
  • Analyze and report test results 
  • Contribute to reviews of the test basis and test artifacts for systems of small to medium complexity. 
  • Learn the use of different types of testing tools; in order to participate in the selection and implementation process. 

Testers who want to demonstrate knowledge and skills in globally accepted testing processes can undertake the ISTQB® Certifications, which are accepted as the de facto industry qualifications for the software testing profession. 

On completing the ISTQB® Foundation Core certificate, you are eligible to continue on to higher level software testing qualifications - the Core Advanced level and then the Expert level. You can also attempt the Agile Tester exam or get one of the Specialist certifications. 

According to the official website, you can either sit for the latest ISTQB Foundation Level 4.0 exam or appear for the previous ISTQB Foundation Level 3.1 exam after taking the course. You can take the Level 3.1 exam through May 9th, 2024.

The latest or newest version that was released in 2023 is version 4.0 of the ISTQB® Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL). The 4.0 version has since replaced the older 3.1 version that was released in 2018.
