The PRINCE2 Foundation exam is considered to be easy. It may take you 1-2 hours daily for 3 weeks or 3- 4 hours for 10-12 days to prepare. Yes, some applicants do fail the certification exam. Some of the common reasons for failure can be a lack of adequate preparation and misappropriation of time. However, the passing rate of the PRINCE2 exam is higher than the failure rate. You need about 55% marks to pass the Foundation exam meaning you need to get at least 33 out of 60 questions correct. For the Practitioner exam, you must score 38 out of 68 questions. If you get an understanding of the appendices, themes, and glossary, you will be able to pass the exam.

The PRINCE2 Practitioner certification must be renewed within 3 to 5 years. As a practitioner, you must take the re-registration exam that has the same standard as the Practitioner exam. Here are a few tips that can help in preparing for the PRINCE2 re-registration exam:

    1. Enroll with an ATO - You can prepare the re-registration exam by yourself. However, if you want to prepare better, you should enroll in a training program with an ATO. Also, it will help you understand and upgrade new changes that have been made to the methodology since the last attempt. It will help you in identifying the changes and updates that have been made after the manual’s previous edition.
    2. Dedicate preparation time - One of the best tips for your re-registration exam is that you need enough time. Also, it is important to have a deep understanding of the PRINCE2 manual to pass the exam successfully.
    3. Make sure that you revise - This exam is for maintaining the PRINCE2 Practitioner certification. You should brush up on all the concepts and the processes. It is advised that you take a couple of days off from work for studying and revising for the exam.

No, PRINCE2 Manual is not a mandatory requirement for passing the exam. Manual and course lessons are adequate for the training. PRINCE2 Manual has all the necessary guidelines and information that you need for passing the examination. It is an important tool needed to prepare for the exam, especially if you are self-studying.

A PRINCE2 exam shield is a software that helps in writing the exams online. Known as the remote web proctor solution, it is installed in the system, that allows you to sit for the exam without any issues. Make sure that you visit the PeopleCert website for checking the compatibility of your computer systems. Also, you need identity photos and credentials like the driving license and passport. It is an acronym for Projects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2). PRINCE2 is a process-based methodology for project management that offers a step-by-step approach for delivering an effective project. It is commonly used in the UK and all across the globe. It focuses on dividing the project into several manageable steps. There are several levels in the certifications:

    • PRINCE2 Foundation
    • PRINCE2 Practitioner
    • PRINCE2 Agile Foundation
    • PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner

Yes, the certification is valid in India and all across the globe. However, because of its region of origin, there can be a preference in which certification is used. PMP is based in the US and accepted in the US, Asia, Canada Middle East. PRINCE2 originated in the UK and is acceptable in the UK, Australia, and Europe. However, even though PMP is more commonly used in India, PRINCE2 is very much valid.

PRINCE2 and PMP are project management certifications that have different frameworks. PMP has the foundation of PMBOK principles and guidelines as its standard of operations. It is a set of working techniques and processes which a project manager can use to accomplish a given project. It is a guide and a theory.

PRINCE2 is a methodology with well-detailed processes and templates that provides a step-by-step direction on organizing and executing projects. It focuses more on practical skills, unlike the theoretical aspect of PMP. PRINCE 2 is an operations manual while PMP is a reference guide.

There are two stages of PRINCE2 certification - Foundation and Practitioner. There are no conditions required for acquiring the Foundation certification. All you need is a basic understanding of project management. However, for the Practitioner certificate, you will need one of the following certifications:

    • PRINCE2 Foundation certificate
    • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
    • Project Management Professional (PMP)
    • IPMA Level A/B/C/D

You also have to go for an online course from an ATO or training by a certified trainer before you sit for the exam.

AXELOS is the accrediting body that provides the PRINCE2 certification.

    The different PRINCE2 Certifications are:

    • PRINCE2 2017 Foundation Certification
    • PRINCE2 2017 Practitioner Certification
    • PRINCE2 Agile Foundation
    • PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner

There is not a single, fixed certification path for obtaining the PRINCE2 certification. There are two different paths suggested by AXELOS:

    • Enroll in a training program with a reputed ATO like KnowledgeHut. At the end of the training, give the exam.
    • Study privately and book the exam through PeopleCert. It is the institute that conducts the exam for AXELOS.

It must be noted that AXELOS doesn’t offer any training. There are Accrediting Training Organizations (ATOs) that caters to your training needs like the KnowledgeHut. It offers the following three learning modes:

    • Classroom - This is a face-to-face learning mode where you can interact directly with the trainer. You will be able to clear your doubts easily.
    • Online classroom - In this virtual mode of learning, you will have live interactions with your trainer.
    • E-learning - Through this mode, you will be able to learn using electronic technologies and explore the educational curriculum.

Here are certain factors that you must consider before selecting the best PRINCE2 certification institute:

    • Affiliation - The first and the most important factor to consider is that the institute should be an AXELOS’ Accredited Training Organization or ATO. When you enroll in a course with an ATO like the KnowledgeHut will enable you to take the PRINCE2 certification exam at the end of the course.
    • Training Modes - You should check if the ATO is providing online and offline modes of training or not. This will enable you to continue your training at your convenience.
    • Terms and conditions - The cost of training will be an important aspect because of the huge amount you will be paying. Take an example where you have to reschedule or cancel your training and the institute refuses to refund the training cost. Therefore, before you enroll in the course, you have to do a thorough check and make sure that you read the terms and conditions thoroughly.
    • Online reviews - You can check the online reviews of the institute to learn more about their services. Check out some magazine or newspaper articles to know more about the techniques used by the training providers.
    • Training venue - You have to check for the comfort and convenience associated with the venue of the training institute. Although it might not seem important, it can make a big difference in the learning environment.
    • Trainers - The quality of trainers is an important factor to help you decide the best PRINCE2 certification institutes. When you learn from a well-experienced trainer, it can make the whole learning process easier and help you pass the exam successfully.
    • Avoid a full class - You have to ensure that you enroll yourself in a small group so that you have a stable environment. If you study in a big group, there will be a lot of gap between the instructor and you. So, go for an ATOM that trains in a small group.
    • Quality of training material - You should check the training materials provided by the training provider. The resources should help you grasp concepts better.

Your trainer will play an important role in getting the PRINCE2 certification. Here are some points you can use for selecting the best PRINCE2 certified trainer:

    • Check their credentials - You will need an experienced trainer to help you get an understanding of the concepts and methods of PRINCE2 using practical examples. So, before you start searching for the best-certified trainer, you should check the credentials and the work experience of the trainer.
    • Offline support and interactions - If you have selected the online training mode, you might need some extra support and guidance from the trainer. Hence, you need a trainer who provides offline support and interactions.
    • Flexible study schedule - A flexible schedule is an important factor to select the best-certified trainer. Also, if you can schedule your sessions at your convenience, you will be able to maintain your work-life commitment.
    • Study aids - The next factor to look out for is if the trainer provides study aids. Also, these study aids will help in clearing doubts regarding the PRINCE2 methods and concepts.
    • E-learning - If you have a busy schedule that is impacting your ability to enroll in the course, you need a trainer who can provide online training.
    • Study assistance - Your end of training should not stop your preparation. Therefore, it is important to know whether the trainer provides a post-course or in-course study assistance.
    • The training institute must be an accredited training organization - AXELOS does not offer training for the certification. It has some accredited training organizations (ATOs), that can cater to all the training requirements. It is important to confirm that the trainer works in an ATO or not.

The PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner certification require 2-days training. The online training for both takes 16 hours of study. While you are selecting the PRINCE2 online training, you will have to select one that offers a video course, training manual, or audio training.

The benefits of the PRINCE2 certification are:

    • With the PRINCE2 certification, you will have an improved project management skill set. Also, you will learn how to work with a methodology along with the terminology, common systems, procedures, and frameworks that can be implemented by project managers for planning, initiating, monitoring, managing, and executing projects.
    • You will have acquired the knowledge and skills for customizing the methodology for suiting the needs of the projects that you are managing. It is important to note that PRINCE2 is more than just an instruction manual. It is a project management methodology that ensures that you understand all the processes and principles and how you can manage them.
    • Another advantage of getting the PRINCE2 certification is that you can start at the foundation level. You don’t have to invest a lot of time and money doing the project management certification. Through the Foundation certification, you will get a complete overview of the methodology.
    • With the PRINCE2 certification, you will become a prized professional in Europe with an average annual salary of £50,000.
    • PRINCE2 is a globally-recognized certification and it is considered to be the standard methodology for project management across the globe.
    • In PRINCE2 projects, all the roles and responsibilities are defined and shared in the organization. Even though project managers play an important role in a project, they are not the only ones responsible for the failure of the project.
    • Having a PRINCE2 certification, you won’t have to get tied up in a specific organization or industry. PRINCE2 methodology can be used by any company, in any industry or a project of any scale. You will be able to expand the possible project work areas.
    • The PRINCE2 certification will be proof of your current and potential employers. Your profile will be entered into the Successful Candidate Register of the AXELOS.

If you want to make the preparation process of the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner exam easier, you have to develop a strategy. Here are a few tips to get you started:

    • Create a strong foundation for the Practitioner level

If you want to get the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner certification, you have to understand that there is a strong relationship between your knowledge of the Foundation level and your success at the Practitioner level. To pass the exam, you must have an in-depth understanding of the Foundation level. Being well-versed with the PRINCE2 Manual is also important.

    • Leave some gap between the course and taking the Agile Practitioner exam

Some candidates like to give the exam immediately after completing their training. But, it is always better to leave some gap between the training and the exam. Here are some reasons why:

    • Even if you are a quick learner, it is better that you start your journey at a slow pace. During this gap, you will be able to absorb the PRINCE2 concepts better. Also, you won’t have to run through the risk of failing the exam.
    • Thanks to the intensive training program of the training providers, there has been a significant increase in the pass rate of the exam. Unfortunately, the exam is getting intensive and the whole process has become even more complicated. So, it is important to have a gap between the training and the exam to understand the process better and revise and practice.
    • Judge the gap between the training and the exam

What exactly is the most ideal gap to have between the training and the exam? Ideally, it can be anywhere between 1 week to 1 month. This depends on how much time you need to prepare adequately. You must ensure that the gap is not too long. It might reduce your ability to recall the information.

If you are preparing for the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner exam, you should create a revision checklist. Here is a reference checklist for you:

    • Understand what the exam’s structure is - To revise for the exam, you must first get an understanding of the exam’s structure. The exam has 8 sections - 6 out of which are based on one theme while the rest based on a set of process groups. Here are the groups:
    • Startup the project
    • Manage a stage boundary with directing a project and closing a project
    • Control a stage through management of product delivery

During the exam, the details of a project will be provided, and the questions will be based on this project. While giving the exam, you will come across some terminologies used for describing the sections.

    • Refer to the scenario - At the separate section, you will find a scenario that should be opened alongside the paper. The best part about this is that you will have to focus on just one project.
    • Manage your time - Time management is a crucial element for passing the exam successfully. You must keep in mind the structure of the exam and the number of questions to manage your time efficiently. There are 9 sections where each section is of 12 marks. You must evenly distribute your time to avoid any rush.
    • Control your emotions - It is your responsibility to prepare for an exam that is challenging and tough. But it is important to avoid getting stressed and have a positive outlook.

PRINCE2 Practitioner and Scrum Master certifications operate at different levels. The Scrum master leans towards the Agile product delivery level while the Practitioner is more focused on project management. If you wish to work in the field of project management, you should go for a PRINCE2 Practitioner. If your job role is related to Scrum Master, you should opt for the Scrum Master certification. Whatever you select should be based on your current and future career prospects. If you plan to work with a Scrum team in the future, adding the certification to your CV will be of advantage.

Also, another major difference between the two is that PRINCE2 Practitioners are related to the waterfall method, while the Scrum certifications are based on the Agile methodology. AXELOS has launched PRINCE2 Agile recently that combines the governance of PRINCE2 with the responsiveness and flexibility of Agile.

Once you have the PRINCE2 certification, you will have to renew it after it has expired. Here is the validity for different PRINCE2 certifications:

    Certification Name

    Lifelong
    PRINCE2® 2017 Practitioner Certification

    PRINCE2® Agile Foundation Certification

    PRINCE2® Agile Practitioner Certification

The PRINCE2 Practitioner certificate expires after three years. After that, you can either maintain the certification through your My PRINCE2 certification or retake the exam. Here is what you have to do for maintaining your PRINCE2 qualification through My PRINCE2 certification:

    • Within 3 months of successfully passing the exam, you have joined the My PRINCE2 subscription. Every year, for the next 3 years, you will have to renew your subscription.
    • Record 20 CPD points every year for extending the PRINCE2 digital badge.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the credit points you can earn through professional training, experience, self-study, and community participation. AXELOS requires all the PRINCE2 certified professionals to stay updated with the project management knowledge. They can do this by acquiring CPD points.

After you have successfully passed your PRINCE2 exam, you can apply for the AXELOS membership. You will have to submit 20 CPDs every year for the next three years to maintain your membership. After 3 years, you will have 60 CPDs that will allow you to apply for the renewal of the certification.

My PRINCE2 subscription is for all professionals in the field of project management who want to use practical help, easy-access support, and professional endorsement to advance their careers. With the My PRINCE2 subscription, you will also have access to the following:

    • Discounts to some of the AXELOS and best practice publications
    • Exclusive white papers
    • PRINCE2® 2017 templates

If you have a PRINCE2 2009 Practitioner Certificate, you must renew it within 3 to 5 years of its issued date. You will have to take the re-registration exam that is of the same standard as the original practitioner exam. It will be 60 minutes long and based on the PRINCE2 Manual.

Through the re-registration exam, you will be demonstrating your commitment towards continuing development and your PRINCE2 knowledge to your colleagues and employers.

Note: The Re-registration exams and the PRINCE2 2009 Foundation and Practitioner exams in the English language were discontinued from 1st January 2018. Also, the re-registration exams in German, Polish, and Dutch were unavailable from 31st March 2019.

Here are a few reasons that will let you know why PRINCE2 qualifications are worth the trouble of renewing:

    • It is unique - The new PRINCE2 version is less prescriptive and more flexible. It focuses on how important social skills are in project management. Some new areas have been added while some old ones have been slashed.
    • You will stay registered - PRINCE2 Practitioner certification does not have a lifelong validity. If you don’t renew it, you won’t be a registered practitioner anymore.
    • You can refresh your skills - While preparing for the re-registration exam, you will have an opportunity to learn something new and revise important techniques. It also helps in reducing the possibility of failure by strengthening your management skill set.
    • It ensures job safety - When you renew your PRINCE2 certification, it shows your employers that you are dedicated to improving your skills. This way, you will be able to future-proof your career.
    • It opens doors to new opportunities - Employers are looking for people who can fit in their organization and work with the team. Several companies have made the certification mandatory for project management positions. And they would prefer the newer version of the certificate over the older ones.
    • It will lead to fewer conflicts - When the whole team is using the PRINCE2 methodology, there will be less conflict in the team regarding what approaches they should use.

The PRINCE2 Practitioner certification is valid for 5 years. After 3 years of passing the exam successfully, you can take the re-registration exam to renew your qualification. You will be able to see the expiry date of your certification on the certificate itself. If you do not renew your certification, you won’t be a registered PRINCE2 Practitioner anymore.

There are 2 ways in which you can renew your PRINCE2 Practitioner certification:

    • The first option is through re-registering for the exam. After 3 years of passing the Practitioner exam, you can take the exam again. The re-registration exam’s format will be like that of the normal one.
    • The second option to renew your certification is by getting the AXELOS membership. This method is easier than taking a re-registration exam. Once you have passed the exam, you can register for the membership. After every 3 years, you will have to renew your membership status. Also, you must accumulate 20 CPDs every year so that you have the required number of 60 CPDs at the end of 3 years.

Once you have completed the PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner training, you will get 32 PDUs.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) is responsible for awarding the PDUs credits. Through the PDUs, you are showing your dedication to the world of project management. Every educational effort that you make in your career will be directed towards your credits. All PMI certifications, except the CAPM certification, require the candidates to earn a certain number of PDUs every three years to maintain their qualification.
